Melissa Abbott, CPA, J.D. has joined Berdon LLP’s Personal Wealth Services team as a Tax Principal. Bringing more than 15 years of professional experience to this role, she advises on tax compliance and planning for trusts and estates, private foundations, and high net worth individuals and their families. Melissa also performs detailed research and analysis of complex tax issues relating to fiduciary income and estate tax. Prior to joining Berdon, she was a Tax Principal at Raiche Ende Malter & Co., LLP.

In her role, she will provide clients with state residency and IRS audit defense services and respond to government inquiries regarding trust, estate, and gift tax issues. Melissa also develops postmortem tax plans for estates and advises clients on the impact of pending tax law changes. Her experience extends to the use of sophisticated estate planning tools such as Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts and Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts.
Melissa is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants where she serves on the Estate Planning Committee and the Trust and Estate Administration Committee. She also serves on the Estate Planning Council of New York City. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. Melissa is licensed as a CPA in New York and Wisconsin and has been admitted to the State Bar of Wisconsin.
