3.30.20 | Client Alert – COVID-19 Update

Under an executive order by NY Governor Cuomo, the NYS Tax Commissioner has extended the April 15, 2020 tax filing due date to July 15, 2020 for NYS personal income tax and corporation tax returns.

This extension applies to returns for individuals, fiduciaries (estate and trusts), and corporations taxable under Tax Law Articles 9, 9-A, and 33.  In addition, taxpayers are permitted to defer all related tax payments due on April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020 without penalties and interest. It does not matter how much you owe.

There is no need to file any additional forms or contact the Tax Department to request or apply for this relief. Returns due on April 15, 2020 will automatically be granted the filing and payment deadline extension and relief from penalties and interest. Taxpayers who cannot file their return by July 15, 2020 can request an automatic extension to file by October 15, 2020 (September 30, 2020 for fiduciary tax returns). Interest, penalties, and additions to tax will begin to accrue on July 16, 2020.

If you are due a refund, you are urged to file as soon as possible.
