In her 40 Under 40 profile in the 1/17/13 LIBN, audit manager Marcy Greenfield speaks of her role advising client management on remediating problems and limiting exposure.
When Berdon Audit Manager Marcy Greenfield discovered her love of math, she decided to become a certified public accountant. However, she had no idea that needing expert math skills was only one component of being a good CPA.
"After my first year at Berdon, I learned about applying business decisions, understanding the clients’ needs and seeing their bigger picture." Greenfield said. "All this added to my desire to stay in this field of work."
Greenfield has 15 years of experience in accounting. She is responsible for determining if a company’s financial statements are in accord with the appropriate accounting rules and accurately represent the company’s financial situation. In her career, she has worked with clients across the real estate arena and in the distribution sector, including businesses in the wine industry. Greenfield is proficient at offering management suggestions on ways to remediate problems and emerge in a stronger position. She is also called on to review a company's operations to identify areas of exposure and develop ways to improve internal controls and increase efficiency.
With vast experience in auditing 401(k) plans, Greenfield determines if the plans adhere to Internal Revenue Code, Employee Retirement Income Security Act and Department of Labor requirements. With her broad expertise in this area, she provides 401(k) audit training to all levels of Berdon professionals.
Extending her reach to the tax arena, Greenfield also performs corporate tax planning services. With her understanding of the client’s industry, she identifies available tax breaks and tax savings opportunites and looks for ways to reduce exposure. She alerts clients to current and pending tax credits and advises on how to apply and qualify.
Greenfield realizes her hard work has been worth it as she has discovered how to both manage her clients’ needs along with balancing her family’s needs. \
"I work hard year–round but always find the time to travel and enjoy life to the fullest — when it is not tax season." she said.
Greenfield is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and is on the committee for the Nassau County Auditing and Accounting chapter. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Brooklyn College and became a licensed CPA in New York State in 2000.
"My goal for the future is to become a valued advisor to our clients, advance at Berdon and earn an invitation to become a partner." Greenfield said.
